Air purifiers for condos and apartments in Canada
Condo and apartment air has its own problems: cooking smells from down the hall, a neighbour’s balcony smoke, and wildfire smoke that finds its way through a sliding door. Renters also can’t touch the ventilation. A plug-in HEPA purifier is the fix you control, and it moves with you when the lease ends. Size it to the room, not the whole unit.

Renter-friendly tips
- Nothing to install. Plug it in, leave space around the intake and outlet as the manual says, and keep the original box for your next move.
- Close the door. A purifier in a closed bedroom works far better than one in an open hallway.
- Use a schedule. Run it on high while you are out and on a quiet speed overnight. The Core 300S-P and Winix 5510 both have app control.
- Balcony doors. On smoke days, keep sliding doors shut and run the unit in the room you spend the most time in.

Questions people ask
Do I need my landlord's permission to use an air purifier?
Usually not. A portable air purifier plugs into a wall outlet and needs no installation, so it is treated like any other small appliance. It also moves with you when your lease ends.
What size air purifier does a condo bedroom need?
Measure the room. For wildfire smoke, aim for a smoke CADR in CFM at least equal to the room's floor area in square feet. A Levoit Core 300S-P at 141 CFM fits one closed bedroom up to about 140 ft².
Is one large purifier or two small ones better in an apartment?
Walls and doors block airflow, so two smaller units, one in the bedroom and one in the living room, usually beat one large unit in the hallway.
Will an air purifier stop smoke from a neighbouring unit?
It can capture particles that reach your room, but odour needs activated carbon, and smoke that keeps coming in under a door or through gaps is a building issue. Raise ongoing problems with your property manager or condo board.
