Start here: match the machine to the air problem
Most Canadian homes run into three different air problems over a year, and each needs a different appliance. Smoke and fine dust need a HEPA air purifier. A damp, musty basement needs a dehumidifier. Dry, static-filled rooms in January need a humidifier. Buying the wrong one wastes money: a humidifier does nothing for wildfire smoke, and an air purifier will not dry out a basement.

Winter air in a Canadian home: what changes from November to March
Once the furnace runs every day, indoor air changes in three ways.
- Humidity drops. Cold outdoor air holds very little water, so heating it makes indoor air dry. Health Canada suggests keeping indoor relative humidity between 30% and 50%, and closer to 30% in cold weather, so moisture does not condense on windows (Health Canada, cool-mist humidifiers). A $15 hygrometer tells you where you are before you buy anything.
- Windows stay shut. Cooking smoke, dust and pet hair stay inside longer. A HEPA purifier sized to the room keeps working when you cannot air the place out.
- The furnace filter works harder. A clogged 1-inch filter cuts airflow. The Filtrete MERV 11 4-pack we recommend is rated for up to 3 months per filter, so one pack covers a full heating season.
Basements are the exception: many stay damp into early winter, especially after a wet fall. Health Canada advises running a dehumidifier when humidity is above 50% or water condenses on cold surfaces (Health Canada, moisture and mould guide). If the basement reads above 50% and the main floor reads below 30%, you may need both a dehumidifier downstairs and a humidifier upstairs.
Furnace season dry air: two humidifier picks
Once the heat runs every day, most Ontario homes need moisture upstairs even if the basement stays damp. Ultrasonic units like the Levoit Classic 300S are quiet and hold a set humidity target. Buying before Black Friday 2026?
Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday is November 30. Air purifier prices on Amazon.ca move a lot: we saw the Winix 5510 at $199.99 during the October Big Deal Days sale, and it was still $259.99 on October 30. If you only need a purifier for winter, it can make sense to wait for the November sales. If you need one now, the Levoit Vital 200S-P was $209.99 on October 30, about $50 less than the Winix, with about the same smoke CADR. Dehumidifiers and humidifiers have moved less in our checks, so buy those when you need them.

Smoke vs damp vs dry
Three indoor-air problems, three different machines. Do not buy a humidifier because the sky looks orange, and do not expect a basement dehumidifier to filter smoke.
